 Reflections at Eventide
--John Harricharan

In the beauty of the evening
Can I see Thy love, O Lord.
In the stillness of the morning
Can I hear Thy Holy Word.

In the blistering heat of noontide
Or the lonely watch of night,
Be it dark or be it dreary
Thou, O Lord, art shining bright.

On the mountain tops I see Thee,
In a babe's bright loving eyes;
In the song birds' tremulous thrillings
And the silent starry skies.

When the wind blows from the ocean
And the clouds above rejoice,
All my being, all my spirit
Hears the murmuring of Thy Voice.

Still the wind keeps blowing stronger,
Trees and birds their anthems raise,
And my heart beats faster, faster,
Joining them in endless praise.

Was it in another country
In a strange and different clime,
That I saw Thy wondrous workings
And beheld the Master-Mind?

Then I was but young and foolish
And my mind I knew not yet.
I was weak and I was troubled,
All I used to do was fret.

Patience, Thou hast told me often,
Is a virtue that I need.
Things there are I still must conquer,
Like my pride and silly greed.

Thou hast been from everlasting!
All I was, I am, can be,
Anything I hope to do Lord,
First of all must come from Thee.

As I learn the things Thou teachest
And my spirit comes to Thee,
I shall follow where Thou leadest,
Even to eternity.

Last and First, Omega, Alpha,
Father, Teacher, Lord, "I Am,"
Let me realize Thy power,
Which will make me say "I can."

Show me then Thy mighty secrets,
Teach me to be calm and still.
Let me learn that nothing's greater
Than to hear and do Thy will.

Teach me Father, teach me all things,
I shall come and stay with Thee.
There to lose in meditation
All that is not really me.
